Materials:

• Wood (100 x 200 x 400mm)
• External wood glue
• Wood Dyes
• External wood varnish
• Weed burner/blow torch

Crafting Process

Preparing the Wood

1. Selecting the Wood: Opt for pieces with an appealing grain pattern. These will influence the visual outcome significantly.
2. Sizing: Trim the wood to your desired length, determining the object’s height. For our stools/side tables, we joined two offcuts.
3. Gluing: Apply external wood glue on the intended inner faces of the wood pieces. A small roller aids in an even spread.
4. Clamping: Position and square the glued surfaces together. Secure them with clamps and allow to dry.
5. Final touches: Sand the wood if necessary to smooth out any irregularities.

Burning the Wood

1. Setup: Ensure a safe environment for this step.
2. Execution: Burn each surface thoroughly until it’s entirely black and minutely cracked. Avoid letting the wood catch fire.
3. Cool down: Allow the wood to naturally cool post-burn.

Wire Brushing the Wood

1. Brushing: Using a wire brush or a drill attachment, scrub off the charred softwood to reveal a lighter color, while the hardwood remains darker.
2. Cleaning: Dislodge any residual particles with a brush or dry cloth, preparing the wood for staining.

Dying the Wood

• Vibrant Approach:
  1. Apply a perimeter of red dye.
  2. Blend in orange dye towards the center, stopping before reaching the middle.
  3. Fill in with yellow dye at the very center, seamlessly overlapping each color for a sunburst effect.
• Subtle Approach:
  1. Coat entirely with yellow dye.
  2. Overlay with orange dye towards the edges.
  3. Outline with red dye for a gentle gradient.

Varnish

1. Application: Cover all surfaces with external wood varnish as directed by its instructions.
2. Curing: Leave to dry thoroughly.
