DIY Book Stand Project
Tools and Materials
First, let’s talk about what you’ll need for this project. The beauty of DIY is in making do with what we have, but a well-prepared workspace and the right tools can turn any endeavour from good to great.
Tools:
- Miter saw
- Drill/Driver
- Jig Saw
- Small screwdriver (optional, but handy)
- Clamps
Materials:
- A 48″ piece of 1×6 board OR a 36″ piece of 1×6 board plus a 20″ piece of 1×2 board
- Wood glue
- (1) cabinet butt hinge
(Note: If you have a table saw, you can modify a 48″ 1×6 into 1x2s for the book ledge. Otherwise, pre-cut 1x2s work perfectly fine.)
Step-by-Step Creation Process
Step 1: Assemble the Back Panel
Your book stand’s back panel is the backbone of the project. Take your 1×6 boards and cut two 14″ lengths from them. If your aesthetic or functional needs dictate a taller stand, feel free to adjust accordingly.
- Apply glue along one edge of each piece and press them together to form an approximately 11″ wide by 14″ tall back panel.
- Once the glue sets, trim one end square with your miter saw. This squared end will form the base of your stand.
- For a bit of flair, sketch an optional handle at the top. Use a jigsaw to cut out your design. For added detail, a drilled hole in the handle can serve as a decorative element or functional part of the stand.
Step 2: Attach the Book Ledge
Moving on to the book ledge, a key component to hold your reading material, tablet, or artwork securely.
- Cut two 10″ lengths from your 1×2 board—one for the bottom ledge and one for the front lip.
- Glue these two pieces together, forming an ‘L’ shape when viewed from the side.
- Once dry, attach this L-shaped ledge to the front bottom edge of your back panel, ensuring it’s centered and flush.
Step 3: Install Hinged Support
The hinged support allows your book stand to be adjustable and foldable, enhancing its portability and versatility.
- Adjust your miter saw to a 30-degree angle and cut a 6 ½″ piece from your 1×6, with both ends beveled at 30 degrees (not parallel).
- Select your cabinet butt hinge and attach one side to your cut piece, ensuring it’s centered.
- Attach the other side of the hinge to the back panel of your stand, allowing the support piece to swing out and prop up the stand when in use.
Step 4: Finish Your Book Stand
Your book stand is now essentially complete and awaiting your personal finishing touches.
- Depending on your chosen material or desired look, consider staining, painting, or applying a finish. For a natural look, simple oils or waxes can enhance the wood’s beauty while providing protection.
- Take a moment to admire your handiwork before putting it to good use or wrapping it up as a thoughtful, handmade gift.
