IN-N-OUT INSPIRED SPECIAL SAUCE INGREDIENTS:
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1/2 tbsp rice vinegar or white vinegar
- 2 tbsp sweet relish
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1/2 tbsp chili flakes (optional)
MAIN INGREDIENTS:
- 1/2 bag of frozen fries
- Cheddar cheese/American cheese
- 2 onions, diced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp neutral oil
- 1/2 tsp salt
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Prepare the Caramelized Onions: Melt butter in a pan over medium-low heat and add neutral oil. Add the diced onions and salt to the pan. Stir every few minutes until the onions caramelize. This will take at least 30 minutes or longer. If the onions start to burn, turn down the heat.
- Make the Special Sauce: While the onions are caramelizing, mix all the ingredients for the sauce in a bowl and set aside.
- Cook the Fries: Bake or fry the frozen fries according to the package instructions.
- Cheese It Up: Once the fries are cooked, add grated cheddar cheese or sliced American cheese on top and broil for 3-5 minutes, or until the cheese melts.
- Assemble: Once the cheese has melted, add the caramelized onions on top and then pour the prepared sauce over it. Serve immediately and enjoy!
NOTES:
- The original In-N-Out sauce does not include chili flakes, but they are added here for those who prefer some heat. This is optional and adjustable to your preference.
- If it seems like the onions are burning, it’s very important to turn down the heat and keep stirring.
- In-N-Out uses American cheese slices, but you can also use shredded cheddar cheese. Either option works well.
