Easy Crochet Scarf Pattern

Materials

  • Yarn: Medium weight (Category 4) yarn
  • Hook: 3.5 mm crochet hook
  • Notions: Tape measure, scissors
  • Optional: Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Abbreviations (US Terminology)

  • ch = chain
  • st = stitch
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • blo = back loop only
  • rep = repeat

Special Notes

  • The initial chain creates the width of the scarf (6 inches). The length can be easily modified by working more or fewer rows.
  • The turning chain does NOT count as a stitch.
  • All stitches after the first are worked in the back loop only to create texture.

Pattern Instructions

Foundation

  1. Ch enough stitches to measure approximately 6 inches. (You may need around 31 chains, but check your gauge for accuracy.)

Row 1

  1. Skip the first chain from the hook.
  2. Hdc in the second ch from the hook and in each chain across.
    • At the end of the row: Turn your work.

Row 2

  1. Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), turn.
  2. Hdc in the very first st.
  3. Starting from the second st, hdc in the blo of each st across.

    • At the end of the row: Turn your work.

Repeat Pattern

  1. Ch 1, turn.
  2. Hdc in the first st. For the rest of the row, hdc in the blo of each st across.
  3. Continue repeating Row 2 until your scarf reaches your desired length. For this example, work until the scarf measures approximately 70 inches.

Finishing

  1. Fasten off the yarn and cut, leaving a tail for weaving in.
  2. Weave in all ends with a yarn needle or your crochet hook.

Conclusion

Congratulations! You have completed a simple and stylish crochet scarf using only half double crochets in the back loop. This scarf offers beautiful texture and is easy enough for beginners, but attractive enough for all skill levels. It makes a thoughtful handmade gift or a cozy addition to your wardrobe.

Pattern Correction

  • Ensure you skip only the very first chain in the foundation when starting Row 1.
  • Turning chain at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch.

Tips

  • To adjust the width, simply add or subtract chains in the foundation; to adjust the length, work more or fewer rows.
  • For an even edge, always work the first hdc of the row into the very first stitch.
  • Use a soft, medium-weight yarn for the best drape and comfort.
