Materials:

  • 3 Wooden fences (2m long and 25cm tall)
  • 1 Plastic box (size as desired)
  • Medium gravel
  • Medium rocks
  • 2 Thick plastic bags
  • Plants (1 Kale, 1 Mangold, 1 Roman Chamomile)
  • 1 Strip of bamboo fencing

Tools:

  • Shovel
  • Optional: Pliers and hammer

Project Steps

Design and Planning

Before you break ground, take a moment to consider the ideal spot for your turtle’s summer pond. Think about factors like sun exposure, shade, and ease of maintenance. Sketching your ideas on paper can be a helpful way to solidify your vision — remember, the sketch is a guide, and it’s okay if the final project deviates slightly from your initial design. Conversations with family members about the chosen spot can ensure everyone is happy with the location.

Gathering Materials and Beginning Construction

With your design in hand, it’s time to source materials. A local hardware store or even your backyard shed could have what you need. Start by setting up the wooden fence according to your sketch, securing it firmly into the ground. Next, prepare the site for your pond by digging a hole sized to your plastic box, then place the thick plastic under where the box will go for extra support and ease of disassembly. Finally, secure the box in the hole.

Laying the Foundation with Rocks

Around the perimeter of the box, lay strips of plastic followed by a blanket of medium gravel. Create a natural-looking border with medium rocks. Additionally, place a layer of gravel and a few medium rocks at the bottom of the box, washing them beforehand to remove any dust.

Putting in Rocks

Constructing the Dipping Bridge

Irrespective of the bamboo fencing’s design, you’ll want to position it across the box, adjusting it to create a gentle dip beneath which your turtle can comfortably fit. Ensure this structure is sturdy and securely anchored, as this will be a focal point of your turtle’s exploration.

Greenery and Water Introductions

Strategically position your chosen plants according to your design, planting them securely. Then, fill the pond with water until it slightly overflows, ensuring your turtle has ample access in and out of the pond. This new ecosystem will not only be a habitat but also a piece of living art in your garden.

Adding Plants and Water

Pond Maintenance

Remember, this turtle pond is a summertime feature. Without a heater and filtration system, regular maintenance such as changing the water and caring for the plants is crucial. Consider the weather and your turtle’s well-being when deciding if they should remain outdoors overnight.

Welcome Home, Turtle!

Introduce your turtle to its new outdoor retreat and watch as it explores its surroundings with newfound interest. This project not only benefits your turtle but also brings a unique, natural charm to your backyard.

This guide is meant to inspire and assist you in creating a beautiful summer haven for your turtle, offering it a slice of nature and yourself, a peaceful nook in your garden to enjoy the pleasures of outdoor life alongside your pet.
