Plagg the Kwami (Miraculous Ladybug) Polymer Clay Tutorial

Bring to life Adrien’s cheeky and beloved cat Kwami, Plagg, from Miraculous Ladybug, using easy polymer clay techniques. This step-by-step guide will show you how to sculpt, assemble, and finish your Plagg figure, whether you’re a total beginner or have some experience with clay.

Materials & Tools

Materials

  • Polymer clay:
    • Black (main color)
    • White (teeth and details)
    • Tropical green
    • Translucent polymer clay (or a mix for the signature eye color)
  • Aluminum foil (for core of the head)
  • Aluminum/craft wire or strong needle (for internal support/armature)
  • Liquid polymer clay (Fimo Liquid or Sculpey Bake & Bond)
  • Glossy varnish (to seal and shine)

Tools

  • Scalpel or craft blade
  • Silicone sculpting brush
  • Ball stylus/dotting tool
  • Needle tool (or pin)
  • Wet wipes or damp cloth (for smoothing clay)
  • Paintbrush (for varnishing)
  • Oven (for baking)

Preparation

Set up your workspace on a clean, non-porous surface (glass, tile, or parchment-covered tray). Have all your colors, tools, and a small bowl of water or wipes ready.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Head: Create the Armature & Cover with Clay

  1. Make a Head Core:
Take a small sheet of aluminum foil and compact it tightly into a ball (about the size of a large marble). This saves clay and prevents cracking.
  2. Cover with Black Clay:
Condition (soften) your black clay by kneading it in your hands. Flatten it into two thin sheets and carefully wrap the foil ball, smoothing the seams until fully covered.

  3. Shape and Sculpt the Face:
Use your thumbs and a silicone brush to gently pinch, push, and smooth the facial features:

    • Slightly indent the area for the “eye sockets” to help with later placement,
    • Softly carve out the brow/forehead and cheeks to match Plagg’s rounded but feline face.
  4. Manipulate for Likeness:
Aim for a round, slightly oval shape. Check reference images for proportions, and don’t worry if yours is a little unique—Plagg has lots of expression!
  5. Mount on a Needle:
Push a needle or skewer into the bottom of the head, so you can handle the head without leaving fingerprints or distorting the shape as you work.

2. Make & Attach Ears

  1. Form Ears:
Roll a small ball of black clay and cut it in half. Shape each half into a cat ear—first a teardrop, then flatten and pinch the base.
  2. Open the Ear:
Use a sculpting tool or your finger to create a slight dip in the center (cat ears are not flat).
  3. Attach & Blend:
Position the ears symmetrically on top of the head. Use your silicone brush (or just your finger) to gently blend/seal the bases into the head, so they don’t fall off after baking.
  4. Adjust Ear Size:
If the ears look a bit too large, trim the bottoms with a blade before attaching.
  5. Finishing Touch:
Use a wet wipe or dampened brush to smooth any joins, remove fingerprints, and sculpt a soft, plush look.

3. Make & Insert Eyes

  1. Blend Colors for Plagg’s Eyes:
Mix translucent and tropical green clay together for that iconic, glowing green.
  2. Shape Eyeballs:
Roll two tiny balls, then flatten slightly (Plagg’s eyes are large and lively).
Gently press into the eye sockets you created earlier.
  3. Shape the Gaze:
With a dotting tool, hollow out the basic shape of the eyes so they look bright and animated.
  4. Create Pupils:
Use black clay to roll two very small cone-like shapes. Insert into the eye sockets (you may need to dig a gentle hole to seat them).
  5. Final Touches:
Use your sculpting brush to adjust the eye area, refine the gaze, and smooth any stray clay.

4. Sculpt the Mouth & Add Fangs

  1. Mouth/Muzzle:
With a rounded ball stylus, gently press to create a smiling mouth, then underscore and deepen it with a hook tool or needle for a mischievous, Plagg-appropriate smile.
  2. Fangs/Teeth:
Roll out two tiny sausages of white clay, then shape into miniature cones. Attach a fang to each side of the mouth, blending gently so they appear tucked into his smile.

5. Make the Body & Legs

  1. Create the Body:
Roll a black clay ball, about 1/3 the size of the head (Plagg is famously “chibi” with a large head-to-body ratio).
  2. Shape:
Pinch one end into a cone for the base/hips. Insert a bit of wire or a toothpick to attach the body to the head later.
  3. Back Legs:
Roll out two small black cones for each leg, and flatten the base for the feet.
Gently shape with your fingers and attach to the lower body sides using liquid clay for a strong bond. Flatten slightly so he sits evenly.
  4. Front Legs:
Roll out two thinner black sausages for the front arms. Position and attach at the sides/upper body.

6. Make Tail, Whiskers, and Hair Tuft

  1. Tail:
Roll a thick black sausage. Curve gently and attach at the back of the body (using a hole and liquid clay for security).

  2. Whiskers:
Roll two thin, long black sausages. Taper the ends and gently curve. Attach one to each cheek with a bit of liquid clay, inserting gently with a needle tool.
  3. Hair Tuft (“Question Mark”):
Roll a small, thin sausage and shape into a soft, question-mark curl. Attach with liquid clay to the top of the head.

7. Bake in Sections

If some parts are fragile, pre-bake them (like whiskers/tail) for 10 min at 110°C (230°F) to firm them up; then assemble and bake the full character for another 20 minutes at 110°C. Let all parts cool fully.

8. Assemble & Finish

  1. Assembly:

Attach head to the body with a wire/toothpick “spine” and a dab of liquid clay for strength.
  2. Varnish:
Once cooled, carefully apply glossy varnish to the whole figure for shine and to protect from handling.
  3. Touch-ups:
If desired, use a bit of white acrylic paint to add a highlight in each pupil for extra “life.”

Helpful Tips for Beginners

  • Always “condition” your clay until smooth and pliable.
  • Use liquid clay where parts join—it acts like glue.
  • For symmetry, pause and step back to check both sides often.
  • Wipes and silicone brushes make blending and smoothing easy.
  • Pre-baking tricky, delicate features separately can help prevent breakage.

Display & Enjoy!

Display your Plagg on your desk, shelf, or give as a gift to a fellow Miraculous fan. Each time you look at your magical little Kwami cat, remember: practice makes progress, and your one-of-a-kind creations are truly special.
