Greedy Teddy Bear in a Honey Pot – Polymer Clay Pattern

Create an adorable and “greedy” teddy bear peeking out from a honey pot, perfect for gifts, desk decoration, or just for fun!

Essential Materials & Tools

Materials:

  • Caramel-colored polymer clay
  • Chocolate-colored polymer clay
  • Cognac-colored polymer clay (for accents)
  • Sahara-colored polymer clay (for muzzle and inner ears)
  • Yellow polymer clay (mixed with translucent clay for honey)
  • Translucent polymer clay (for honey blend)
  • Black polymer clay (for eyes, nose, eyebrows, mouth)
  • Aluminum foil (for pot core)
  • Liquid polymer clay (for strong joins)
  • White acrylic paint (for eye highlights)
  • Gloss varnish/sealer (for finish)

Tools:

  • Silicone sculpting brush
  • Scalpel or craft blade
  • Needle tool or toothpick
  • Dotting tool
  • Rolling pin or smooth rod
  • Paintbrush (for paint and varnish)
  • Oven (for baking)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Honey Pot Base

  1. Make the Pot Core:
Roll a ball of aluminum foil to form the foundation for the honey pot. This saves clay and gives strength.
  2. Cover and Shape the Pot:

Use caramel-colored polymer clay to completely cover the foil ball. Smooth and form a rounded, pot-like shape.
  3. Create the Pot Rim:
Roll a caramel-colored sausage, wrap it around the top edge of the pot, and cut off any excess. Blend/weld the ends together using your fingers or a silicone brush for seamlessness.

2. Pot Lid

  1. Lid Base:
Make another caramel-colored ball, flatten it, and shape it to the size of the honey pot’s opening.
  2. Lid Edge:
Roll another sausage, wrap around the edge of the lid, and join the ends for a raised rim.
  3. Handle:
Roll a small cognac-colored ball, place in the center of the lid for the handle.

  4. Lid Accent:
Roll a cognac-colored sausage, flatten slightly, and position it in the center of the pot. Straighten with a needle and silicone brush.

3. Pre-Bake the Pot

Bake the honey pot and lid for 10 minutes at 110°C (230°F) to firm the base before adding the bear.

4. Bear Head

  1. Head Shape:
Roll a ball of chocolate-colored clay, shape into a bear head. Using fingers and a dotting tool, gently indent where the muzzle/eyes will sit. Tap to subtly flatten the front for demarcation.
  2. Muzzle:
Sculpt a small Sahara-colored ball, flatten slightly, and attach to the lower front of the head for the muzzle. Blend gently with a dotting tool.
  3. Nose:
Add a small black clay ball for the nose on top of the muzzle.

  4. Eyebrows:

  5. Eyes:
Roll two tiny black clay balls and place as eyes.

  6. Mouth:
Create a thin black sausage, curve slightly, and place below the nose for the mouth.

5. Bear Legs & Ears

  1. Legs:
Roll a piece of chocolate-colored clay, cut in half, flatten the ends. Position on the pot, pressing to fit and ensuring adhesion.
  2. Ears:
Roll two chocolate-colored balls, flatten slightly. Hollow the center with a silicone brush, then add smaller Sahara-colored balls for inner ears. Trim edges if needed for easier positioning. Attach to the bear head.

6. Honey Drips

  1. Honey Blend:
Mix yellow clay with translucent clay for realistic honey.
  2. Form Dripping Effect:
Roll a ball of honey blend, flatten, then fashion zigzag or dripping shapes with a blade. Position above the pot rim to look like honey is dripping down.
  3. Repeat for Lid:
Make another honey blend ball, flatten, and form dripping effect for the lid. Attach with liquid clay.

7. Assembly & Baking

  1. Attach Parts:
Use liquid polymer clay wherever parts touch (head to legs, honey to pot/lid, etc.) for extra strength.
  2. Assemble Bear:
Place the bear’s head between the legs (at the pot opening, as if peeking out), and attach ears.
  3. Bake All:
Bake the full creation for 20 minutes at 110°C (230°F). Allow it to cool.

8. Final Touches

  1. Eye Highlights:
Use a fine-tipped paintbrush and white acrylic paint to add two small dots as highlights on each eye.
  2. Varnish:
Once dry, apply gloss varnish for shine and protection.

Tips for Beginners

  • If clay is too soft, chilling it can help it firm up and make shaping easier.
  • Liquid polymer clay acts as glue—use it for attaching all parts.
  • Take time smoothing joins with a silicone brush or a wipe for seamless, professional results.
  • Zigzag shapes for honey enhance the realistic dripping effect—be playful!
  • If you don’t have all colors, you can mix clays or use acrylic paints.
