Miraculous Ladybug Earrings – Easy Polymer Clay Pattern

Inspired by the Miraculous Ladybug cartoon – create your own magical, iconic red and black spotted earrings!

Essential Materials & Tools

Materials

  • Red polymer clay (Fimo or Sculpey)
  • Black polymer clay (Fimo or Sculpey)
  • Flat pad (head) earring studs (metal posts for earrings)
  • Liquid polymer clay (Fimo Liquid or Sculpey Bake & Bond)
  • Epoxy resin (for glossy finish, optional but recommended)
  • Isopropyl alcohol wipes or moist cleaning wipe

Tools

  • Craft knife or blade
  • Small dotting tool, ball stylus, or toothpick (for flattening spots)
  • Smooth work surface
  • Oven (for baking clay creations)
  • Toothpick or skewer (for spreading resin)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare Your Work Area

  • Wipe down your work surface to avoid lint or dust sticking to your clay.
  • Gather all your materials for easy access.

2. Make Red Ladybug Domes

  1. Condition the Red Clay:
Soften your red polymer clay by kneading it in your hands until smooth and pliable.

  2. Roll into Balls:
Make two equal-sized small balls (about 1-1.5 cm in diameter; adjust for desired earring size). Try to keep them very round and identical for symmetry.
  3. Flatten the Balls Gently:
Place each red ball on your work surface. With very light pressure, flatten the bottom side just a bit—so it sits without rolling. The top should remain rounded (forming a hemisphere, like a turtle shell or a ladybug’s back).
  4. Refine Shape:
With your fingers, shape the edges a little to get a dome—hemispherical and smooth. Don’t make them too flat; they should look plump and rounded.

3. Attach to Earring Studs

  1. Prepare the Studs:
Take your flat pad earring posts. Put a small dot of liquid polymer clay on the metal pad (this acts as a glue and helps bond clay to metal).

  2. Position the Domes:
Gently press each red clay dome onto the center of a metal pad, making sure the clay covers the pad fully but doesn’t hang over the sides too much.
  3. Secure:
Gently press all around for a snug fit, but don’t flatten the dome. Remove any visible liquid clay from the edges.

4. Create Black Ladybug Spots

  1. Prepare Black Clay:
Soften a little black polymer clay.

  2. Make Tiny Balls:
Cut and roll five small, equal-sized balls for each earring (ten total)—these are the ladybug’s spots.
  3. Place the Center Spot:
On each red dome, position one black ball right in the middle at the top.
  4. Add 4 More Spots:
Position the remaining four balls around the sides, evenly spaced out. Try to mimic the layout seen on a ladybug or domino: like a five on a dice.

  5. Flatten Spots Gently:
Using a dotting tool, stylus, or toothpick, lightly press each black ball so it flattens into a neat circular dot but doesn’t spread messy over the red. The black spots should look crisp and bold, not lumpy.

  6. Final Surface Clean:
Use a cleaning wipe or alcohol wipe to carefully remove any dust, lint, or fingerprints from the red clay (avoid smearing the black).

5. Bake the Earrings

  1. Place Earrings Carefully:
Set the earrings flat on a baking tile or piece of parchment—you want the domes to keep their shape.
  2. Bake:
Bake according to your clay’s package instructions—typically 110°C (230°F) for 20 minutes. This will cure both the clay and bond it to your metal earring backs.
  3. Cool:
Remove from oven, allow to cool completely before touching the domes or moving on.

6. Add Glass-Like Shine (Epoxy Resin Finish) – Optional

  1. Mix Your Resin:
In a disposable cup, mix equal parts of A and B resin (following package directions).
  2. Apply Resin:
Use a toothpick or small stick to carefully drop resin onto the top of each earring dome. Nudge it gently toward the edges so the whole red surface is covered (but try not to let it drip over the side).
  3. Spread and Smooth:
Use the toothpick to even out the coating and make sure all the black spots are sealed too.
  4. Cure:
Let the resin sit and harden for at least 24 hours, or as recommended by your resin instructions. You can add a second coat for an even thicker glassy look once the first layer is fully cured.

7. Finishing Touches

  • Once resin is set and hard, your earrings should have a beautiful, professional glass-like shine.
  • If needed, clean the earring backs with an alcohol wipe to remove excess resin or clay dust.

Tips for Beginners

  • If the black spots get smudged on your fingers, wipe hands before touching the red.
  • Work on a white ceramic tile or glass to make it easy to clean up and bake right on your work surface.
  • For best symmetry, weigh your clay balls before shaping.
  • If you don’t have liquid clay, you can rough up the surface of the metal pad with a nail file before pressing the clay on—but liquid clay is best!

Creative Ideas

  • Try glitter red clay for a sparkly version.
  • Make matching pendants or charms using the same steps, but larger.
  • Add a jump ring into the side before baking for a dangly earring option.

Finished!

You now have your own adorable Ladybug Miraculous earrings—bold, glossy, and inspired by the magical cartoon!
Enjoy wearing them, gift them to a fellow fan, or sell sets at local craft fairs. This project is perfect for practicing precise shaping, working tiny details, and using resin for that special glass effect.
