This project is perfect for beginners who want to learn new clay techniques and make a recognizable, fun character.

Essential Materials & Tools

Materials

  • Polymer clay (Fimo):
    • Caramel (cognac) brown – for main face
    • Yellow – for parts of eyes and feathers
    • Indian red – for feathers
    • Pacific apple green – for leaves and details
    • Black – for mouth and details
    • White – for teeth
    • Blue (optional, for feathers)
  • Aluminum wire or thin rods (for reinforcing feathers and leaves)
  • Varnish (optional, for a shiny, finished look)
  • Baking parchment/paper (for baking surface)

Tools

  • Scalpel/craft knife – for cutting and shaping clay
  • Dotting tool or ball tool – for making holes and indents
  • Needle tool/thin sculpting tool – for adding texture
  • Sculpting tools/your fingers – for smoothing and blending
  • Oven – for baking clay

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare Your Workspace

  • Cover your workspace with baking paper or a protective sheet.
  • Gather all clay colors and tools listed above.
  • Make sure your clay is soft and easy to work with (condition if needed by kneading).

2. Sculpt the Face

a. Shape The Base:

  • Take a ball of caramel-colored (cognac brown) clay, flatten it gently into an oval shape—this will be the mask’s face.
  • Use your scalpel to define the overall shape.

b. Mark Eye, Nose, and Mouth Areas:

  • Use the dotting tool to gently press indentations for the eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Don’t press too deep, you want shallow hollows.

3. Sculpt the Eyes

a. Build the Eye Sockets:

  • Roll two small balls of yellow clay, flatten each slightly.
  • Place both into the indented eye sockets, spacing them evenly.

  • Use sculpting or dotting tools to gently smooth and keep to shape.

b. Add Pupils:

  • Roll out two thin, equal apple green strips (or balls, cut in size).
  • Place them over the yellows for pupils. Smooth carefully.
  • Clean up any excess clay using your scalpel, keeping the eyes neat.

4. Build and Shape The Eyebrows

a. Sculpt Browns:

  • Roll two small sausages of caramel brown clay.
  • Cut to equal length for symmetrical eyebrows.

b. Place & Flatten:

  • Position over each eye, press gently to flatten.
  • If too flat, roll and add a second layer for a relief effect and extra dimension, as in the tutorial.

c. Texture:

  • Use a needle tool to draw small lines for texture, mimicking stylized wooden eyebrows.

5. Sculpt The Nose

a. Make a Triangle:

  • Shape a small ball of caramel brown clay into a triangle for the nose.
  • Position between the eyes, weld lightly (smooth edges to attach).

b. Smooth & Secure:

  • Blend the nose shape with the face using fingers/tools.

6. Build The Mouth & Lips

a. Mouth Outline:

  • Roll a thin sausage of caramel clay.
  • Carefully outline the bottom edge of the mouth with this sausage, pressing gently.

b. Shape The Lips:

  • Make another thin sausage, flatten, and position it for the lower (and then the upper) lip.
  • Smooth with fingers/tools so lips look natural.

7. Add Teeth and Mouth Details

a. Make Teeth:

  • Roll and flatten a small strip of white clay.
  • Cut into little squares for teeth. Position inside mouth, spacing evenly.

b. Inside Mouth:

  • Take a fine black ball of clay, smooth it inside the mouth for a cartoonish “lip” effect/background.

c. Position Upper Teeth:

  • Place smaller white squares for upper teeth if desired; ensure they’re visible but don’t overcrowd.

8. Add Holes & Leaf Detail

a. Face Holes:

  • Use the dotting tool to make 6 small holes: one under the mouth, others on sides and chin.

b. Leaf:

  • Roll apple green clay into a ball, flatten, and shape into a leaf.
  • Texture lines into the leaf with your needle tool.

c. Beard Detail:

  • Add small sausages of clay on top of the leaf for a fun mini beard.

d. Attach Leaf:

  • Place over chin hole; weld gently to keep secure.

9. Sculpt and Attach Feathers

a. Making Feathers:

  • For each feather (yellow, red, blue, green), roll clay into small balls, flatten into elongated feather shapes.

11. Bake & Finish

a. Baking:

  • Transfer your finished mask onto parchment-covered tray.
  • Preheat oven to 180°C.
  • Bake for 25 minutes (follow clay package instructions).

b. Cool & Varnish:

  • Allow to cool fully.
  • Optional: apply thin layer of varnish for shine and protection.
