Polymer clay in various colors is the key material for crafting this figure, along with tools such as sculpting blades, dotting tools, and simple molds to shape and refine the details. Depending on your preferences, finer elements like facial expressions or outfit accents can be applied with acrylic paint once the clay is hardened. Sealing the figure with a glossy finish helps protect your work and gives the character a polished look.

This figure is ideal as a collectible item, a thoughtful gift for a fellow fan, or even as a charm for personal accessories. It’s a project that combines fun with artistic expression, allowing you to capture the essence of a beloved anime character in your own unique way. Working on this figure promises hours of enjoyment and a truly special result.

Instructions

1. Making the Head & Face

Base and Sculpting the Face

  1. Armature & Covering:
    • Take a polystyrene ball for the head.
    • Condition a large ball of flesh-colored clay (bigger than the polystyrene ball).
    • Flatten into a disc, wrap around the ball, and smooth out evenly. Remove all seams with fingers/silicone brush so it’s a perfect sphere.
  2. Face Sculpting:
    • Shape the forehead, cheeks, and jaw/chin by gently pressing with thumbs and fingers.
    • Use your thumbs to press in a guideline for the eye area.
    • Define the nose area with a thin snake of flesh clay and shape gently until satisfied.
  3. Eye Sockets:
    • Use your thumbs and a ball/dotting tool to begin hollowing large, chibi-style eye sockets. The space between eyes should be about the width of one eye.

2. Eyes, Brows, and Features

Building Up the Eyes

  1. Sclera (White of Eyes):
    • Place small balls of white clay into the eye sockets, flatten gently.

  2. Iris:
    • Place small balls of blue (or blended blue) clay for the irises, flatten and spread with silicone brush for soft, chibi effect.
  3. Pupils & Highlights:
    • Add small balls of black for pupils, blend edges if desired.
    • Add a tiny white ball for the highlight, blend into place (layering gives soft, gentle anime eyes).
  4. Eyelashes & Brows:
    • Roll thin snakes of black clay for the upper and lower lashes; place above/blow each eye, trimming excess.
    • Repeat for other eye.
    • For brows, roll two short snakes of black clay, arch gently, fix above eyes using liquid clay if needed, and smooth with silicone brush.

  5. Mouth:
    • Indent a small smiling mouth with a tool below the eyes.
  6. Ears:
    • Shape two small balls of flesh clay, flatten them, and indent with a ball tool.
    • Attach to the sides of the head, blend with silicone brush.

3. Preparing and Placing the Hair

  1. Main Cap:
    • Roll a ball of black clay, flatten into a thick disc, and lay on top of the (baked and cooled, if you have pre-baked) head.
    • Trim or tuck the clay around the face with a blade, and pat/roll for smooth finish.
  2. Sideburns & Side Locks:
    • Roll two small snakes for hairlocks, cut ends flat, and attach on each side at the front.
  3. Fringe/Bangs:
    • Make a smaller ball, flatten, and cut into individual “locks” with scissors. Position these above the face, working piece by piece for stylized chibi hair.
  4. Texture:
    • Use a flat tool or needle to mark hair texture — short strokes for detail and realism.
  5. Ponytail/Braid:
    • Roll a long, thin sausage of black clay, taper one end, and fringe it with scissors for ends.
    • Twist or braid gently using a needle, and attach to the back of the head with a pin of aluminum wire for support. Insert firmly into the back of the scalp.

4. Legs & Shoes

  1. Legs:
    • Roll two flesh-colored sausages, even in size and slightly conical.
  2. Shoes:
    • Roll two black balls, slightly flatten, and indent to make shoe soles with a ball tool.
    • Press one end of each leg into a shoe, shape as needed.
  3. Pants:
    • Roll out black clay (pasta machine at setting 3 if you have one), cut rectangles to wrap around each leg, leaving a little gap above the shoe.
    • Trim excess, smooth seams with a silicone brush, and add gentle folds/texture with a needle.
  4. Joining:
    • Attach the two legs together: either use a strip of black clay over the join, or cut and join at a slight bias, then blend or cover the join with a belt or tunic.

5. The Body & Tunic

  1. Torso:
    • Shape a teardrop or small sausage from flesh clay for the torso, leaving a neck protruding.
    • Flatten the base for neat joining.
  2. Attaching to Legs:
    • Position the body on top of the connected legs, matching width for a smooth transition.
  3. Tunic (Top):
    • Roll out red clay, cut a strip to wrap around the body as the top/shirt, rounded at the bottom hem. Trim and fit as needed.
    • Cut a thin red strip for the collar; wrap around the neck base, trim, and blend.
    • Optionally, roll out a second piece for the back/layered look and blend seams with a wipe or silicone brush.
  4. Adding Texture:
    • Use a needle or tool to add folds or seam lines as desired.

6. Arms & Sleeves

  1. Arms:
    • Roll a long thin flesh-colored sausage, divide in two for both arms.
    • Shape and flatten one end for each hand.
    • Mark thumb (pull out with tool), then snip with scissors for four fingers, and round or shape as desired.
  2. Cover Wrists (Shirt Cuffs):
    • Wrap a thin white strip of clay (rolled out with a pasta machine/roller) around each wrist.
    • Trim and smooth.
  3. Position Arms:
    • Trim shoulder end at an angle, and attach directly to the body, blending at the shoulder joint.

  4. Final Arm Pose:
    • Slightly bend or pose arms as desired (one forward, one down, etc).

7. Detailing and Finishing Touches

  1. Belt and Buttons:
    • Roll a thin black snake; wrap around the waist for a belt.
    • For buttons, roll and flatten small gold balls, place down the front. Indent each center with a ball tool.
    • Add thin black U-shaped pieces to connect the buttons in pairs.

  2. Final Assembly & Baking:
    • Insert an aluminum wire/rod into the top of the body.
    • Bake all parts (head and body/legs) separately at 110°C for 30 minutes (or as per your clay instructions).
    • Once cool, glue the head onto the wire/neck securely.

Tips for Success

  • Blend, blend, blend: Use silicone tools and wipes for smooth, clean joins, especially for the face.
  • Take your time with details: Eyes, hands, and hair make all the difference in a cute chibi.
  • Pre-bake tricky parts: For safest handling, bake the head before adding hair; pre-bake shoes before assembly, etc.
  • Be patient: Hands, hair, and little accessories take extra time—it’s worth it for a polished look!
  • Use reference images: Use manga or anime pictures of Ranma to match hair and clothing details.
