DIY Folding Screen Room Divider With Chicken Wire
I agree that other house areas can be modern, but the in-screen porch is the place where rustic decor suits most. So, I decided to share this farmhouse-style DIY folding screen idea for display. It would feature two foldable screen frames and a hexagonal net where you can hang different items. Not for the porch, you can also use this folding display anywhere it may look good. Because this chicken wire project is quick, easy, and simple, even one person with basic woodworking skills can make it!
Materials You Will Need For DIY Folding Screen
Below are the materials for a DIY folding screen with chicken wire:
- Slats Of Pallet Wood: I used aged pallet wood slats for a rustic look. Each was 1 inch thick and 4 inches wide (1 x 4’s). For the width of the DIY chicken wire screen, 2 feet, and the height, 6 feet of pallet boards were used. A total of 8 boards will be needed.
- Corrugated Nails: These long nails have a series of ridges along the length that join & hold two wooden edges well. 8 of these nails will be needed.
- Wood Glue: Before inserting the nails to join two pallet pieces, use the glue for extra safety.
- Chicken Wire (24″ wide x 10′)
- 3/8” Staples: We shall use them to attach the chicken wire to the display.
- 1 pair of small hinges: We shall join the two screen frames and make the folding screen.
Tools Needed:
- Staple gun
- Ordinary Saw or Table Saw
- Push Stick
- Hammer
- Screw Driver
- Drill
How To DIY Folding Screen With Chicken Wire?
In this section, we will learn the step-by-step making of folding chicken wire screens for display. Because we are using the old wood, we shall not stain it. However, it is better to waterproof the wood. Below are instructions:
Step 1: Gather The Supplies
Collect the supplies as mentioned (pallet slats, nails, glue, chicken wire, staples, door hinges!) and tools.
Step 2: Cutting The Pallet Boards
If pallet boards are wider and thicker than 3” and 1/2”, respectively, like me, you need to cut the sides to suit this measurement.
- We did that on the push-stick automatic table saw, and it reduced much effort.
- First, adjust the height of the table saw blade to the desired height for the cut. For example, in our case, we want the height up to 1/2 inch, so the blade should be almost 1 inch high. Make sure the blade is securely tightened.
- Then, mark the width and height on the board, adjust the fence, place the push stick, and modify each pallet by moving through the rotating blade.
- Similarly, do this for all.
- Mark an angle of 45 degrees at the one end of the 6-foot pallet boards and on both ends of the 2 of 2 feet boards.
- Now, we need to cut a slope of 45 degrees from the top of each six 6 feet pallet (which is 4!). Two for the first screen and two for the other as main height.
Tip: For the focused and correct cuttings, use a high intesity light on the table.
- On 2 of the 2 feet sections, cut 45-degree angles on both ends… Now, you would remain with two sections that are straight and don’t have any slope cut.
Step 3: Joining The Pallets
- Measure 12″ from the bottom of the 6′ pallets and mark a line from the ends that are not cut at an angle. At that line, use one of the 2 feet pieces that weren’t cut at an angle and fasten it with corrugated nails…
- There should be two 6′ boards on the end of the 2′ board. You can evenly hammer until the nail goes inside.
- Do the same for another screen.
Tip: Glue edges of the pallet before attaching with the corrugated nails…
- After getting an H-look, take the 2-foot pallet with both ends angled and attach it with the sloped end of both 6′ boards as in the picture. Do the same thing at the top with the second screen.
Make sure the sloped angle are perfect. Otherwise the boards would not fit well.
Now, join them using the corrugated nails as follows.
Step 4: Attach The Screen Frames Together
- Now, take a pair of door hinges, screwdriver, and bolts. Drill holes on both frames.
Make sure the one hole on the one frame is exactly facing the hole on other.
- Align the frames parallel (somehow touching each other!) and place the hinges, and screw the bolts using the driver in the hinge holes.
- This way, both the frames and now joined together.
- They would fold easily for storage or transportation.
Step 5: Attach the Chicken Wire
Ensure you have a staple gun or hammer, suitable staples or U-shaped nails, and a pair of gloves and wire cutters.
- Cut your chicken wire.
- Stretch the chicken wire.
- Hold the chicken wire against the wooden frame and begin stapling or nailing the wire. Attach the first staple or nail to one corner, then follow along the edges, spacing the staples or nails about 6-8 inches apart.
- Double-check tightness.
Step 6: Decorate the Screen
As mentioned, you can decorate this DIY room divider with anything.
I used S hooks to hang a few plants covered in burlap, which would be so cute as a party favor…each guest could take their tiny plant off the screen before they leave…
When we finish the backyard project, I’ll take this down on the patio and hang candles for a nighttime get-together…
Old photos can be easily displayed for a family reunion…or photos of a baby’s first year at the one-year party!
Or you could fill burlap bags with candy for a party…
This will serve as a backdrop for lots of parties, and it took The Husband under an hour to put it together!
The great thing about this is it folds up flat and can easily be stored!
