Cute Crochet Coin Purse Pattern

Materials List

  • Yarn: 1.5 mm nylon cord (alternatives: size 5 mercerized cotton, soft 8-ply polyester)
  • Hook: 2.2 mm crochet hook
  • Metal Frame: 5 cm coin purse metal frame
  • Handmade tag: Optional, for decoration
  • Needle: For sewing the crocheted piece to the frame (preferably with a small head to fit frame holes)
  • Nylon thread: For attaching purse to frame (e.g., 0.331 mm)
  • Scissors
  • Stitch Marker (optional)

Key Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • spike sc: spike single crochet (explained below)
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • rep: repeat

Special Notes

  • Spike Stitch: This is a long single crochet. Insert hook into the previous round (not the current top loop), yarn over, pull up a loop (making it long), finish as a single crochet. Results in a “spiked” texture.
  • Purse is worked in continuous rounds (spiral) except where noted.
  • Adjust purse height as desired; this sample uses “2 inches” of spike stitch.
  • Remember to secure your magic ring tightly for a neat bottom.

Pattern Instructions

1. Base (Magic Ring and Rounds)

  1. Make a magic ring.
  2. Ch 2 (counts as first dc throughout).
  3. Round 1: Work 12 dc into the ring. (Including ch-2, total = 13 dc)
  4. Pull the tail tightly to close the ring.
  5. Sl st to first top chain to join.
    Save
  6. Round 2: Ch 2 (counts as dc). 2 dc in same st (increase).
    • 2 dc in each st around (increase in every st).
    • At the end, if the first dc is “alone,” add 1 dc in joining to pair it—there should be 26 dc.
    • Sl st to join.
  7. Round 3: Ch 2, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st.
    • (Dc in 1 st, 2 dc in next st) rep around.
    • At the end, if the start had 1 dc only, add another dc at the join so all increases are in pairs.
    • Sl st to first top chain.
      Save

2. Transition: Outer Loop Single Crochet Round

  1. Ch 1.
  2. Work sc in each outer loop only (back/outer loop of each dc from the previous round) to prepare for the spike stitch body.
    • You should have 38 or 39 sc (depending on increases).
    • Be sure to include the joining st as described.
    • Do not sl st at end; work in spiral for next rounds.

3. Spike Stitch Body

  1. Starting at the first single crochet, alternate:
    • Spike sc: Insert hook into the corresponding stitch one round below the current round (the base’s dc round), yarn over, and complete sc (this covers/overlaps a sc).
    • Short sc: sc as normal into the next stitch.
  2. Continue: (Spike sc in next, sc in next) around.
    Save
    • Make sure each sc is only worked on once (don’t repeat in the same st).
    • Work in continuous rounds, no slip stitch, marking the start if helpful.
    • Continue in pattern until desired pouch height (about 2 inches of spike stitch).

4. Top Edging

  1. At the final round, when purse reaches desired height and both sides have the same spike count, finish the round.
  2. Work one round of regular sc around the top for a stable edging (no spikes).
  3. Sl st to join. Fasten off and weave in ends.

5. Assembly: Attaching Frame

  1. If needed, turn the purse so that your original join is at the side (not center front).
  2. Place purse inside the frame, aligning seam/ends so the finish rests on the side or as desired.
    Save
  3. Using needle and nylon thread:
    • Sew the purse to the frame using a running stitch, securing through each frame hole and the corresponding crocheted edge.
    • Repeat stitching forward and back for reinforcement.
    • Don’t sew too tightly—the purse should sit flat and symmetrical in the frame.
  4. At the end, knot securely and trim thread.
  5. Attach handmade tag if desired.
    Save

Conclusion

You have completed a clean, sturdy, and textured coin purse perfect for small change or mini accessories. This project is quick but professional, ideal for gifts or small business.

Pattern Correction & Tips

  • Correction: If your base is ruffling, you have too many increases; if it curls, you have too few. Adjust accordingly in Rounds 2–3 to maintain a flat base.
  • Tip: Use a stitch marker at the beginning of spike stitch rounds to keep track of your starting point.
  • Tip: Firmly close your magic ring and leave a long inside tail for extra security.
  • Tip: Ensure the purse is centered in the frame before sewing; uneven stretching will affect final shape.
  • Tip: Practice the spike stitch tension so your spikes are even and the pouch walls stand upright.
