Pattern

Base

  1. Foundation Row:
    Ch 40.
(You can adjust the starting chain for your preferred width.)
    Save
  2. Row 1:
Sk the first ch from the hook, sc in next 39 ch.
Ch 1, turn at the end.
    Save
  3. Continue for Edging:
    • Work 2 sc more into the last ch for a total of 3 sc at the end.
    • Rotate your work and continue to crochet across the opposite edge (bottom loops of foundation chain), sc in each ch across (39 sc).
    • At the other corner (starting ch), make 2 sc in the same ch (so both ends have 3 sc each).
    • Join with a sl st to the first sc at the end. (You now have an oval base.)
      Save
  4. Rnds 2–4:
    • For each new round, ch 1, sc in same st (mark this st), sc in each st around, with 2 sc in each corner st (for oval shape, at each “end”).
    • Join each round with a sl st to the first sc.
  5. After around 4 rounds, you should have a smooth oval base.

Body (Mesh Section)

  1. Transition Round:
    • Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch-1), sk 1 st, dc in next st, ch 1, rep from * to * around.
(If stitch count does not work out perfectly, it is okay to adjust by skipping 2 or working 2 into the same st at corners.)
  2. Mesh Body:
    • Work a total of 21 mesh rounds:
      • At the end of each rnd, join with sl st to 3rd ch of first ch-4.
      • For each round: ch 4, sk next st, dc in next dc (from previous round), ch 1, rep around.
    • Continue to desired height (21 rounds or as preferred).
      Save

Bag Upper Edge

  1. Edging Round 1:
    • Ch 1, sc in ch-1 sp, sc in top of next dc, rep all the way around. At the corners, work 1 sc in each space.
    • Join with sl st.
  2. Decrease Round:
    • To gently shape the bag, at every 8th space, instead of sc in ch-1 sp, skip the space, and sc in next dc’s top only (decrease made).
    • Continue around as above.
  3. Final Upper Edge:
    • Work 2 more full rounds of sc in each st, joining and ch 1 to continue, as above.
    • FO after last round.

Handles

  1. Strap 1:
    • Ch until the handle measures ~50 cm (or desired length, check for stretching).
    • Work sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.
    • At last st, work 2 sc.
    • Join the handle firmly to the upper edge of the bag with sc or by stitching with yarn needle for extra durability.
  2. Strap 2:
    • Repeat exactly as for first handle, joining it to the opposite side of the bag.

Finishing

  • Weave in all loose yarn ends with a yarn needle.
  • Gently block or steam-press the bag into shape if needed.
  • Done!
    Save

Conclusion

You have completed a practical and stylish mesh market bag using basic stitches and cotton yarn. This eco-friendly bag is reusable, washable, and perfect for shopping or carrying your essentials. The pattern can be easily adapted for different sizes and strap lengths.

Pattern Corrections and Tips

Correction:

  • The video referenced Turkish terms like “hill” (meaning ch-space or dc), which are clarified as chain spaces or double crochets in the pattern.
  • All directions and stitch counts are standardized for clarity.

Tips:

  • Keep stitches and tension even for a neat mesh.
  • Make sure to check the handle length before attaching, as cotton bags will stretch with weight.
  • Use a sturdy seam for handle attachment—double back for strength if carrying heavy items.
