Caprese Sandwich Recipe
The Caprese Sandwich, a South Carolina inspiration, has become a summertime favourite in many homes, including ours. Think the taste of fresh, juicy tomatoes and silky smooth mozzarella, complemented by the peppery bite of arugula and the aromatic caress of basil leaves, all nestled between slices of crusty sourdough bread. A drizzle of balsamic glaze adds a sweet and tangy finish, binding these flavorful layers into a sandwich that is simple yet irresistibly sophisticated.
Ingredients
- Caprese Paninis
- Bread, (we prefer sourdough)
- Fresh Mozzarella, sliced
- Roma Tomatoes, sliced
- Arugula
- Basil
- Pesto
- Butter
- Balsamic Glaze
- 1 Cup Balsamic Vinegar
- 1 teaspoon Honey, (or sugar)
Instructions
Make the Balsamic Glaze:
- Bring the vinegar and honey to a simmer in a small pot over medium heat until reduced by
- 1/2. Do not boil, turn to medium-low if needed. Set aside to cool.
- 1 Cup Balsamic Vinegar,1 teaspoon Honey
Make the Caprese Sandwiches:
- Prepare the pesto per recipe instructions.
- Spread pesto on both pieces of bread. Place arugula, basil, tomatoes, mozzarella, and a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Drizzle a little balsamic glaze and top with the other piece of bread.

- Heat a panini grill or grill pan and butter the outside of the sandwich. Grill until golden and serve.

Tips and Tricks
- Sourdough or any sturdy, crusty bread is recommended to hold up all the ingredients without getting soggy.

- Though this recipe is vegetarian, feel free to add chicken to the sandwich for additional protein.
