Materials List

  • Yarn: 100% Cotton DK or any medium-weight yarn (choose multiple colors for a vibrant look, or stick with one color for simplicity). Suggested amount: Approx. 50–100 g of yarn for each granny square.
  • Hook: 2 mm crochet hook (or size to match your yarn).
  • Scissors: For cutting yarn.
  • Yarn Needle: For weaving in ends and sewing granny squares together.
  • Zipper: 12 cm (4.7 inches) or adjust to fit the width of your pouch.
  • Thread and Needle: Choose thread that matches your chosen yarn color for sewing the zipper.
  • Fabric Lining (Optional): Felt or similar fabric cut to the size of the pouch for a neat interior finish.

Key Abbreviations (US Terminology)

  • CH: Chain
  • SL ST: Slip Stitch
  • SC: Single Crochet
  • DC: Double Crochet
  • Beg: Beginning

Special Notes

  • This project uses basic granny square construction with groups of 3 double crochets per cluster and corners built with CH 2 spaces.
  • To ensure a polished finish, sewing the zipper and (optional) lining is done after the granny squares are crocheted and joined.
  • The crochet edges are worked in back loops only (BLO) to create a distinct structure ideal for sewing.

Pattern Instructions

Step 1: Crochet the Granny Square

You’ll need to make two identical granny squares.

Round 1:

  1. Create a magic ring.
  2. CH 2 (counts as first DC). Work 2 DC into the magic ring.
    • This forms the first cluster.
  3. CH 2 (corner space).
    Save
  4. Work 3 DC into the magic ring. Repeat another (CH 2 + 3 DC) two more times.
  5. CH 2. Pull the magic ring tight to close the center.
  6. Join to the top of the CH 2 with a SL ST.
  7. Fasten off and cut yarn.

You should have 4 groups of 3 DC clusters, each separated by CH 2 corners.

Round 2:

  1. Join a new color yarn into any corner CH 2 space.
  2. CH 2 (counts as the first DC).
  3. Work 2 DC into the same corner space, CH 2, and then 3 DC into the same corner space (forms 1 corner).
  4. Move to the next CH 2 space. Work 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC into the corner space.
  5. Repeat this process for the remaining two CH 2 spaces.
  6. Join to the top of the CH 2 with a SL ST and fasten off.
    Save

You should now have 4 corners separated by DC clusters.

Round 3 and Beyond:

  1. Join a new color yarn in any corner CH 2 space.
  2. Work as follows in each corner:
    • 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC.
  3. For the spaces along the sides (formed in previous rounds), work 3 DC directly into the space. Do not chain between these clusters to avoid large holes in the granny square.
  4. Continue this process for as many rounds as needed, working corners as 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC and sides as 3 DC clusters.

For the pouch in this tutorial, complete a total of 7 rounds. The last two rounds can be in the same color for continuity.

Finalizing the Squares:

  1. Weave in all loose ends securely using a yarn needle.
  2. Be sure to fasten off the magic ring tightly.

Step 2: Add Edging to Each Granny Square

  1. Using the same yarn, attach yarn anywhere along the edge of the square.
  2. Work 1 row of SC around the granny square, stitching in back loops only (BLO).
    • For corners: Work 2 SC into each CH 2 corner space.
      Save
  3. Join with a SL ST at the end of the round.

This edging row adds texture and structure to the square, and creates a clean base for sewing.

Step 3: Assemble the Pouch

Mark the Zipper Area:

  1. Lay one granny square flat, using the bottom corner CH 2 spaces as reference.
  2. Starting in the first CH 2 corner, mark the ninth stitch on both sides of the square. Skip the first 8 stitches along the side. The unmarked section will house the zipper.

Sew the Two Squares Together:

  1. With wrong sides facing out, align the two granny squares.
  2. Using yarn, sew the squares together starting from one marked stitch, around the edges, and stopping at the other marked stitch. This leaves one side open where the zipper will be inserted.

Step 4: Add the Zipper

  1. Select a zipper that matches the width of your pouch (approx. 12 cm).
  2. Using matching thread, sew the zipper into the open section at the top of the pouch.
  3. Catch the loops of the crochet edge as you sew to ensure a discreet finish.
    Save

Step 5 (Optional): Add a Lining

  1. Cut a piece of felt or fabric slightly smaller than the pouch’s dimensions.
  2. Insert the lining into the pouch and attach it using small whip stitches along the zipper seams and sides.

Finishing Touches

  • Ensure all yarn ends are securely fastened.
  • Steam block gently if needed, but avoid the zipper.

Conclusion

Congratulations! You’ve completed a granny square pouch. This project is an excellent way to practice working with granny squares while adding functionality to your crochet work. The zipper and optional lining add durability and utility, making this pouch perfect for storing small items or gifting.

Pattern Correction Notes

  • When working SC along the edges in BLO, ensure corners don’t pucker. Add extra SC stitches as needed in corner spaces.

Tips for Success

  1. Color Coordination: Select contrasting yet complementing colors for a stunning design.
  2. Tidy Edges: Work single crochet carefully in BLO to create clean, professional edges.
  3. Zipper Attachment: Use a sewing needle small enough to pass through the crochet stitches without snagging.
  4. Practice Magic Ring: If you’re unfamiliar, practice creating a secure magic ring to ensure no gap forms in the center of the granny square.
