Crochet Bulge Top Pattern

  • Upholstery needle to weave ends
  • Stitch markers

Special Features

  • Two identical bulge-shaped cups joined centrally
  • Combination of double crochet (dc) and chain spaces (ch) to form hollow details
  • Use of cluster stitches for decorative “blocks”
  • Adjustable size by changing foundation chains and rows
  • Versatile straps threaded through holes and tied at the back or front
  • Delicate cord with mini clusters for beautiful straps

Difficulty Level

Intermediate
(Requires knowledge of dc, sc, ch, working into chain spaces, increasing stitches, clusters, and joining)

Step-by-Step Pattern

Bulge Cup Construction

Round 1: Foundation Chain

  • Make a slip knot.
  • Chain 14 for size Small/Medium; adjust to 12-14 for S, 14-16 for M, and 16-18 for L, depending on your tension.
  • Tip: Make chains loosely to allow flexibility.
    Save

Round 2: Starting Points and First High Point Simulation

  • Skip the first chain.
  • Insert hook in the second chain, skip one chain, go to the next (second ahead), and make a single crochet (sc).
  • Chain 1 (creates a separation chain).
  • This simulates your first high point (dc).
  • Place a stitch marker on this chain for easy tracking.

Round 3 and following

  • Make a double crochet (dc) on top of each chain until the last base chain.
  • At the final base chain, work 3 dc, ch 1, and 3 dc all in the same chain stitch. This forms the bulge increase and turning point.

Round 4: Turning the work

  • Make dc stitches across the upper loops of the chains, following the bulge curve.
  • Always work 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in the central chain (increase).

Round 5 onwards

  • Chain 3 to simulate the first dc.
  • Continue to make dc on top of each stitch from the previous row.
  • At the center chain space (the bulge increase), make 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc to maintain the bulge.
  • Repeat this back-and-forth pattern for as many rows as desired (sample used 7 rows).
  • Important: Check symmetry — both sides should have equal stitch counts.

Hollow Block Row Construction (Buraquinhos)

Hollow Row (Cluster Stitch Row)

  • Turn the work.
  • Chain 3 (to simulate first dc), chain 2 (separation).
  • Skip 2 base stitches and insert hook into the 3rd stitch, work a cluster of 3 dc closed together:
    • Yarn over, insert hook, pull loop through (4 loops on hook);
    • Yarn over, pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook);
    • Repeat two more times in the same base stitch to have 4 loops on the hook, then yarn over and pull through all loops to close cluster.
      Save
  • Chain 2 separation.
  • Repeat clusters separated by 2 chain spaces across the row.
  • At the center bulge (hole), make two clusters separated by one chain (for the bulge increase).
  • End with corresponding cluster and chain spaces.

Following Row: Double Crochet on Top of Clusters

  • Turn the work.
  • Chain 3 to simulate the first dc (place a stitch marker here).
  • For each cluster below, crochet 2 dc into the chain spaces and 1 dc directly into each cluster, grabbing both loops.
  • At the center hole, repeat the increase: 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc into the hole.
  • Continue for one double crochet row.

Joining the Two Cups

  • Make two identical cups following instructions above.
  • Place cups side by side with right sides facing up.
    Save
  • Join them at the center by slip stitching or single crocheting through the base chains of both cups.
  • Use slip stitch and chain 1 to loosely hold the cups together before working a full row of single crochet stitches to unite.
  • After joining, weave in and secure yarn tails.

Bottom Band Construction

  • Work rows alternating between rows of:
    • Single crochet (sc) rows around the base edge.
    • Rows of double crochet (dc) with chain spaces to allow lace effect.
    • Rows with clusters (blocks) and chain spaces for decorative holes, suitable for threading the straps.
  • Inside each hole, work 3 sc for consistency.
  • The sample finishes with a couple of rows of solid high points (dc).
    Save

Strap (Cord) Creation

  • Use the center hole at bottom of the top bulge to attach yarn.
  • Make a small knot to secure.
  • Create a cord by working mini clusters of 3 dc closed together separated by 3 chains along the length.
    • Insert hook into the first chain, yarn over, partially finish the dc (leaving loops on the hook), then complete cluster by yarn overs and pulls as shown above.
  • Repeat until reaching desired length (e.g., 60 clusters), or adjust for fit.
    Save
  • Finish with a loop for tying.
  • Make two cords to thread through holes on each side of the bottom.

Assembly and Wearing

  • Thread one strap through the holes on one side and cross it to the opposite side hole.
  • The straps cross at the back creating an “X”.
  • Tie the straps behind for adjustable fit.
  • This method allows adaptation for various body widths and sizes.

Tips From The Tutor

  • Adjust foundation chains and rows to get your preferred bulge size and cup fit.
  • Make chain stitches slightly loose to avoid overly tight fabric.
  • Use stitch markers to mark increases and centers for symmetry.
  • Check the stitch count each row to maintain balance between sides.
  • Experiment with color changes for fun effects.
  • Try on the piece as you crochet to adjust straps and fit.

Conclusion

This bulge top pattern offers a beautiful combination of solid and airy stitches with a creative bulge shape perfect for summer wear. It emphasizes adaptability in sizing and decorative details that make the piece unique. With this intermediate-level project, you will improve your skills in cluster stitches, joining, and shaping.
