Difficulty Level

Beginner to Intermediate — Basic stitches like single crochet, double crochet, chain, and slip stitch are used. Some experience with color changes and increasing stitches recommended.

Materials Needed

  • Worsted weight yarn in multiple colors (links provided in description)
  • Crochet hooks: 3.5mm (or size suitable for yarn)
  • Stitch markers or pins
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle for weaving ends

Step-by-Step Pattern

1. Ribbing (Waistband)

  1. Make a slip knot and chain 10.
  2. Starting in the second chain from the hook, insert your hook and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through both loops for a single crochet (SC).
  3. SC across all 10 chains.
  4. Chain 1, turn your work.
  5. For the following rows, work back loop only single crochets (BLO SC) across. Insert hook through the back loop only of each stitch, yarn over, pull through 2 loops.
  6. Save
  7. Repeat the BLO SC rows until your ribbing chain measures your waist circumference (or just below the waist), e.g., 23 inches for size XS.

2. Joining Ribbing Ends

  1. Chain 1 at the end of your last row.
  2. Align ribbing ends and join using slip stitches (SS) through the first stitch of each end simultaneously to form a loop.
  3. SS evenly around the seam, leaving the last stitch for a color change.

3. First Color Change and First Single Crochet Round

  1. Insert hook through the last stitch as usual.
  2. With new color yarn, pull through all loops and finish the SS.
    Save
  3. Chain 1.
  4. Into each “hole” or gap around the ribbing (spaces between stitches), place 1 SC all the way around to create defined stitches for the body.
  5. Join with a SS to the first SC.

4. Starting Double Crochet Rounds

  1. Chain 3 (counts as first DC).
  2. DC into the same stitch and into every stitch around.
  3. Join each round with SS to the top of the initial chain 3.

5. Color Change and Additional DC Rounds

  • Change colors every round as desired by finishing the last stitch with the new color yarn.
  • Chain 3 and DC each stitch around for each color round.

6. Increasing for Hip Shaping
Save

  1. After initial rounds, count stitches and place stitch markers where your hips will be (usually sides of skirt).
    Save
  2. Continue double crocheting the rounds, but when you reach a stitch marker:
    • Work 2 DC in that single stitch (increase).
  3. Continue normal DC in other stitches.
  4. Repeat placing markers at increase points and increase 2 DC per marker in every round until desired hip width is reached.
    Save

7. Final Rows for Tapering

  1. After desired hip circumference, stop increasing.
    Save
  2. Work a few rounds of normal DC (no increases) to taper skirt to your legs or thighs for a snug fit.
  3. Finish with color changes or your preferred border.

Tutor’s Suggestions

  • Always try the skirt on as you work to ensure perfect fit and comfort.
  • Adjust ribbing length based on waist measurements, and adjust increases based on hip size.
  • Use stitch markers to mark where increases start and end for symmetry and ease.
  • Color changes add personality; feel free to choose your favorite palette.
  • For a less noticeable seam, join ends carefully with slip stitches in loops.

Uses

  • Lightweight, breathable summer skirt perfect for casual wear or beach trips.
  • Stylish and personalized handmade garment.
  • Adaptable length for mini, midi, or longer skirts.
  • Great project to improve crochet stitch knowledge with color changes and shaping.

Tip

To keep edges neat when changing colors, always finish your last stitch of the old color by pulling through the new color yarn on the final yarn over.

Conclusion

This vibrant and stretchy summer crochet skirt is a fun and rewarding project perfect for stitchers wanting a flattering and comfortable handmade garment. Its adjustable sizing, bright color options, and simple techniques make it accessible for beginners while leaving room for creativity.
