Whether you’re an avid gamer or looking for a unique gift idea, this project promises fun, functionality, and a fantastic addition to your gaming nights.

Materials List

For this project, you will need:

  • 3mm plywood
  • Felt (from a local craft store)
  • A small, strong magnet (a 5mm cubic neodymium recommended)
  • A paper clip
  • A small hinge (available at hobby stores)
  • String
  • Glue (both wood-glue and super-glue)
  • A pencil
  • Clamps

If you don’t own a cutter for the plywood, consider utilizing an online laser cutting service.

Tools Required

  • Laser cutter (or access to one)
  • Editing software (to modify cutting files if necessary)
  • Sharp knife or scissors (for adjustments)

Step-by-Step Guide

Gathering Your Materials

Start by preparing all the materials listed above. Ensure your plywood and felt are the correct sizes and gather the small items like the magnet, paper clip, and hinge.

Cutting the Pieces

Using the provided digital files, cut out the necessary pieces from your plywood and felt. Adjust the layout and cutter’s power settings as required. Remember, if you’ve chosen a felt with varying colors like we did, this is when you decide the look of your tower’s interior.

Marking the Tower

Lay out the tower’s back and sides. Position the angled side pieces of felt lining on the side sections and mark the diagonal lines where your tumbling slopes will go.

Assembling the Tower Shell

Begin glueing the back, sides, and base of the tower together, ensuring all joints are firmly connected. A trick for neater glue lines is to lay the pieces flat and draw glue along the joint edges before assembling.

Fitting the Bottom Slope

Insert the bottom slope into the tower, but not before dry-fitting to ensure proper orientation. Apply glue along your marked lines and place the slope, using gentle clamps to hold it in place as the glue sets.

Installing the Guide Slopes

Add two triangular guide slopes inside the tower to ensure dice don’t get trapped. Generous amounts of wood glue will compensate for the lack of right angles, making a secure joint.

Lining the Interior

Adding felt lining reduces noise and aids the placement of top tumble slopes. Apply wood glue inside one side of the tower and smooth the felt over it, clipping as needed for tight fits. Repeat for the back of the tower and the face of the bottom ramp.

Adding the Tumble Slopes

Refer to the felt linings for slope positions. Flex the tower sides to insert the slopes, glue in place, then add felt on top before clamping.

Attaching the Door

Align the tower’s front and door, ensuring even clearance. Flat-open the hinge, apply super glue generously, and attach. We used a wide single hinge for simplicity.

Lining the Front & Starting the Magnetic Lock

After adjusting the magnet hole size on the front lining, glue the felt in place. Identify magnetic poles with a paper clip, glue the magnet with a pole facing down.

Finalizing the Magnetic Lock

Cut and curve a paper clip to sit snugly above the door for the magnet to latch onto. Secure with super glue and let dry.

Beautifying the Doorstep

Improve the appearance of the doorstep area with a black felt piece to cover exposed wood and accommodate the hinge bulge.

Finishing the Door

Create a handle from jute string and line the door’s interior with felt. Use wood glue to fix the string in place, avoiding knots for a flat finish.

Mounting the Front

Glue and clamp the front piece to the rest of the tower, using a Spanish Windlass if necessary for extra pressure.

Adding Crenellations

Complete your tower’s iconic look by attaching the crenellated pieces atop, ensuring a proper fit and symmetry.

Your Dice Tower is Complete!

Congratulations! Test your tower with an array of dice to ensure smooth rolling. Enjoy the enhanced gaming experience and the admiring glances it’s sure to draw.

Optional Accessories

Consider creating additional matching accessories, like a dice tray, to complement your new dice tower.
