Chunky Crochet Hoodie Sweater

Materials

  • Yarn: Paintbox Yarns Simply Super Chunky (Super Bulky #6).
    • Amount: Approximately 16-18 skeins (65 yards each skein) for size small.
    • Color: Candy Floss Pink (or any color of your choice).
  • Crochet Hook: 8 mm
  • Notions:
    • Tapestry needle (for weaving in ends and sewing pieces together).
    • Scissors.
    • Stitch markers (optional but useful for keeping track of rows and attaching panels).

Gauge

  • 4 rows of double crochet (dc) x 4 stitches = 4 inches x 4 inches.
  • Note: It’s recommended to make a small sample swatch to ensure the correct gauge before proceeding.

Finished Sizes

  • The tutorial provides the instructions for a size small sweater, but the pattern can be easily adjusted for other sizes:
    • Increase or decrease the chain length for the body or sleeves.
    • Add more rows for a longer design.
(Instruction for further sizing customization is available on the creator’s Patreon.)

Pattern Instructions

1. Sleeves

The sleeves are worked first in 15 rows of double crochet (dc) in back loop only (BLO).

Save

Steps:

  1. Start with a slip knot.
  2. Chain 43 for a size small (length of the sleeve, adjust as needed for larger or smaller sizing).
  3. Work double crochet (dc) across the foundation chain:
    • Skip the first 2 chains from the hook.
    • Begin your first dc in the third chain from the hook and work 1 dc in each chain across.
  4. At the end of the row, chain 2 (counts as the first dc in the next row), turn your work.
  5. For Row 2, begin working in the back loop only (BLO) of the stitches:
    • Skip the first stitch (which is used for the chain 2).
    • Work 1 dc BLO in each remaining stitch across.
  6. Repeat Step (5) for a total of 15 rows.
    Save
  7. Make 2 sleeves using the same steps.

Set the sleeves aside for now.

2. Front Panels

Each front panel will form one side of the sweater, including the hood.

Steps:

  1. Start with a slip knot and chain 32.
    • Adjust this number for a longer or shorter sweater (e.g., for a cropped or full-length version).
  2. Begin working double crochet (dc):
    • Skip the first 2 chains.
    • Place 1 dc in each chain across.
  3. At the end of the row, chain 2, turn your work, and work dc in BLO back across the row.
  4. Complete a total of 4 rows of double crochet in BLO.
  5. Add the hood extension:
    • At the end of Row 4, begin creating the hood by chaining 36 chains (for a small size, adjust length as needed for the hood).
    • Turn and work 1 dc in each chain of the new chain extension.
    • Continue the dc BLO pattern down the body of the panel.
      Save
  6. Introduce increases at the top of the hood:
    • When you reach the top of the hood (end of any row that is working along the new chain section), add 2 dc into the last stitch to create the increase.
    • Continue to do this for every row along the hood’s top edge only.
  7. Make 8 rows for the hood extension before stopping.

Create another identical front panel with hood extension.

3. Back Panel

The back panel is a simple rectangle that does not include a hood.

Steps:

  1. Start with a slip knot and chain 34, same as the front panels without hood extensions.
  2. Work rows of dc in BLO using the same method as the front panels:
    • Complete 24 rows in total.
  3. Fasten off and weave in any ends.
    Save

4. Assembly

The sweater’s panels need to be seamed together. Work with the sweater inside-out to ensure clean seams when flipped.

Steps:

  1. Hood Assembly:
    • Line up the hood edges from each front panel and seam them together from the base of the neck to the top edge. This will form the hood shape.
      Save
  2. Shoulders:
    • Align each front panel to the back panel (with the hood at the back of the neck).
    • Sew along the outer edges to secure the shoulders, leaving openings for the armholes.
  3. Sleeves:
    • Fold each sleeve in half lengthwise and seam along the long open side to create a cylindrical shape.
    • Attach each sleeve to the armhole openings in the body.
  4. Side Seams:
    • Seam along the sides of the body panels, connecting the front and back while also sewing the sleeves closed.
    • Align edges carefully for a seamless connection.

Turn the sweater right-side out when all seams are complete.

5. Edging

Adding edging on the sleeves and bottom hem provides a neat and finished look.

Sleeve Cuffs:

  1. Attach yarn to any stitch along the sleeve’s edge (wrist).
  2. Work 1 round of single crochet (sc) into every stitch around the wrist.
  3. Join the round with a slip stitch, then chain 1 to begin the next round.
  4. For the second round, work in the following pattern:
    • Work 1 sc into each of the next 3 stitches.
    • On the 4th and 5th stitch, make a decrease (sc 2 together).
  5. Continue the pattern (3 sc, decrease) around the wrist. Join with a slip stitch and chain 1.
  6. For the next round, increase the frequency of decreases (e.g., work 2 sc between decreases). Repeat these rounds until the cuff fits snugly.

Bottom Edging:

  1. Attach yarn to a corner at the bottom of the sweater.
  2. Work 1 row of single crochet (sc) around the entire bottom edge.
  3. To make the edging firmer, add 1-2 rows of sc with decreases (following a similar decrease pattern used in the sleeves: 3 sc, decrease).
  4. Fasten off, weave in the ends.
    Save

Finishing Notes

  1. Ensure all pieces are securely fastened when seaming. Go over seams twice if needed for durability.
  2. Weave in all loose ends securely using a tapestry needle.
  3. For additional options, sew buttons to the front or add a drawstring to the hood.

Final Words

Congratulations on completing your Chunky Oversized Hooded Sweater! This is the perfect blend of cozy and stylish, and its oversized nature makes it ideal for layering. You can customize the length, sizing, or add decorative elements like buttons or ties. The use of super bulky yarn ensures the project works up quickly, making it great for gifting or personal use.

Tips for Maintaining Your Sweater

  • Wash by hand or use a gentle cycle in cold water to maintain the shape and texture.
  • Lay flat to dry to prevent stretching.
  • Avoid heavy pulling or hanging to keep seams intact.
