Materials

  • Ice Yarns Lorena Worsted (55% cotton, 45% acrylic), medium weight
  • 4 skeins total (approx. 2 skeins per bag)
  • 5 mm crochet hook
  • Stitch marker (optional)
  • Yarn needle for weaving ends

Pattern Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Yarn

  • Cake your yarn balls for easier handling.

Step 2: First Granny Square (11 Rounds)

  1. Make a slip knot.
  2. Chain 4, join with a slip stitch into the first chain to form a loop.
  3. Into loop, work a beginning double crochet cluster: make 2 single crochets stacked to simulate one dc plus 2 regular double crochets (total 4 dc in that first cluster).
    Save
  4. Chain 2 (corner space).
  5. Work 3 double crochets into the loop (second cluster).
  6. Chain 2, 3 double crochets (third cluster), chain 2, and 3 double crochets (fourth cluster).
  7. Chain 2, then slip stitch into the top of the first beginning double crochet cluster to close the round.

You now have round 1 of the solid granny square with 4 clusters and 4 corner spaces.

Step 3: Second Round

  1. Turn your work; chain 1 (does not count as a stitch).
  2. Work 3 double crochets into the first corner space.
  3. Chain 2 (corner space).
    Save
  4. Work 3 double crochets into the same corner.
  5. Chain 1, then 3 double crochets into each side space.
  6. Chain 1 between clusters.
  7. At each corner, repeat 3 dc, chain 2, 3 dc.
  8. Slip stitch into the first double crochet to end the round.

Step 4: Subsequent Rounds (3 to 11 for 1st Square)

  • Repeat the pattern described in Step 3, always:
    • Chain 1 to start (turning chain, doesn’t count as stitch)
    • 3 dc clusters in corner spaces with chain 2 between clusters
    • Chain 1 between clusters along edges
      Save
  • Keep turning the square each round for a clean look.
  • Continue until your first square has 11 rounds total.

Step 5: Second Granny Square (10 Rounds)

  • Follow the same pattern as the first square.
  • Crochet 10 rounds instead of 11 on the second square to prepare for joining on the 11th round.

Step 6: Joining Round (Round 11 on Second Square)

  1. Start round 11 with chain 1, turn, and work the usual pattern of 3 dc clusters into spaces.
  2. When you reach a corner, do the corner clusters as usual.
    Save
  3. Instead of chaining 1 between clusters on the joining edges, slip stitch into the corresponding space on the other granny square.
  4. Continue the pattern:
    • 3 dc cluster in current square’s stitch space
    • Slip stitch into opposite square’s corresponding space
  5. Join three sides of the two squares together this way leaving the top open for the bag opening.

Step 7: Finishing the Bag Body

  • Continue the joining round until all three sides of the granny squares are joined.
  • Slip stitch to the first stitch to finish.
  • Pull tight and weave in all ends securely.
    Save

Step 8: Making the Straps

  1. Find the top edge of your bag (the open side).
  2. Starting two clusters in from the corner, make a slip knot.
  3. Insert a standing single crochet into that space.
  4. Make 3 half double crochets (hdc) into the same space.
  5. Chain 1, turn.
  6. Work 3 half double crochets into the previous row’s 3 hdc stitches (ignore the first standing sc).
    Save
  7. Repeat chaining 1, turning, and working 3 hdc into the previous row for 52 rows (or desired strap length).
  8. Attach strap to the opposite side, matching the space two clusters from the corner using slip stitch and half double crochets to secure.
  9. Fasten off and weave in ends.
    Save

Tutor’s Suggestions

  • Using a cotton blend yarn adds sturdiness and prevents the bag from stretching out when carrying heavier items.
  • Turn your granny square every round to prevent the square from leaning or becoming wonky.
  • Count the halves of your hdc rows by identifying the distinct horizontal lines when making straps to keep track easily.
  • Joining squares as you go saves time and reduces sewing later.

Uses

  • Perfect for grocery shopping, beach trips, or everyday carry.
  • Makes a quick, thoughtful handmade gift.
  • Durable and washable tote for busy lifestyles.

Tip

To keep your straps extra firm, consider lining or interfacing the straps with fabric or crocheting a double thickness by making two straps and sewing them together.

Conclusion

This bright granny square tote bag is a fantastic beginner-friendly project that combines classic stitches with clever construction techniques. With just two granny squares and simple joining, plus comfy crocheted straps, you’ll have a stylish, sturdy tote ready in no time! Perfect for gifting or personal use, this quick pattern works up fast thanks to the medium-weight yarn and bold colors.
