Crochet Heart Granny Square Cardigan Pattern

Special Features:

  • Handmade heart motif as the centerpiece.
  • Granny square construction surrounding the heart.
  • Modular design with separate squares assembled into panels.
  • Versatile cardigan with sleeves and edging trim.
  • Uses common crochet stitches, great for intermediate skill level.

Difficulty Level:

Intermediate – basic crochet knowledge required (chains, single crochet, double crochet, half double crochet, triple crochet, slip stitches) plus the ability to assemble squares and seams.

Materials:

  • Yarn (colors of your choice)
  • Crochet hooks: 3 mm, 3.5 mm, 4.5 mm (used for different steps)
  • Stitch markers (optional but recommended)
  • Scissors

Pattern Steps:

Part 1: Making the Heart Motif

  1. Wrap yarn around two fingers to create an X shape.
  2. Insert hook under first loop, twist, grab second loop, pull through — 1 loop on hook.
  3. Hold the tail to crochet over later. Chain 3.
  4. Into the circle, double crochet (dc) three times: yarn over (yo), pull through loop, yo, pull through two loops twice.
  5. Chain 2 for corner space.
  6. Do 3 dc into the circle again.
    Save
  7. Chain 2, repeat 3 dc into the circle two more times to form 4 corners total.
  8. Chain 2, pull the tail string tight to close the center gap.
  9. Switch to 3 mm hook. Slip stitch into the 3rd chain of the initial chain 3.
  10. Slip stitch: insert hook into stitch, pull yarn through two loops, then pull first loop through second loop on hook.
  11. Switch back to 4.5 mm hook, chain 1.
  12. Into the first chain 2 space, do 8 dc. Chain 1.
  13. Single crochet (sc) in next chain 2 space, chain 1.
  14. Into middle dc stitch, do 2 sc, chain 1, then 2 more sc. (This forms the heart point.)
    Save
  15. Chain 1 and sc in next chain 2 space. Chain 1.
  16. Into last chain 2 space, do 8 dc. Count your stitches to confirm.
  17. Switch to 3 mm hook, slip stitch to join the heart.
  18. Add stitch marker at joining point (optional) and weave in ends.

Part 2: Making Granny Squares Around the Heart

  1. Create a slip knot with yarn and chain 3. Slip stitch into back loop of initial chain to join.
  2. Work only in back loops for this round:
    • sc into back loop of next stitch.
    • half double crochet (hdc) into the next back loop.
    • double crochet (dc) into next back loop.
    • triple crochet (tr) into next back loop.
  3. Chain 2, then double crochet in next back loop, half double crochet in next, and sc in next 4 stitches (all back loops).
  4. Chain 2, sc in next 4 stitches. Remove stitch marker.
  5. Half double crochet into gap between squares.
  6. Continue this pattern with sc, hdc, dc, tr stitches in back loops to complete the square.
    Save
  7. After rounds are complete, slip stitch to join and cut yarn.

Part 3: Assembling the Cardigan Panels

  1. Make 14 granny squares for the back panel. Arrange into rows.
  2. Using sc, join squares horizontally to create rows.
  3. Join rows vertically using sc to complete back panel.
  4. For front panel, start with heart granny square and create four rows of 3 dc clusters separated by chain 1.
    Save
  5. Attach front panel to back panel by single crocheting together along sides, leaving gaps as needed. Use stitch markers to keep seams aligned.
    Save
  6. Repeat for other front panel.

Part 4: Making and Attaching Sleeves

  1. Take 2 squares; place one upside down on top of the other (right sides together).
  2. Using sc, join squares edge to edge through chain 2 spaces along sides to form sleeve panels. Repeat for the other sleeve.
    Save
  3. Attach sleeves to body by fitting sleeve seam into cardigan’s armhole gap.
  4. Using smaller hook (around 2.5 mm), sc through edges of both sleeve and body panels to join. Don’t stress about perfect alignment; adjust naturally as you go.
  5. Work sc all along to secure the sleeve.

Part 5: Finishing and Trim

  1. For the collar and edges, attach yarn with chain 1 and work dc stitches evenly along edges. Chain 3 and turn for each new row, repeating two rows of dc.
  2. Work along armholes, bottom edge, and front openings for a neat finish.
    Save

Tutor’s Suggestions:

  • Using stitch markers helps keep seams neat and symmetrical, especially at corners and joins.
  • Don’t worry if stitches aren’t perfectly aligned during assembly; crochet naturally adjusts.
  • Swap hook sizes for tighter or looser stitching where indicated to get the best fit.
  • Practice the heart motif separately first if unsure; it forms the highlight of the cardigan.

Uses:

This cardigan is perfect for layering on cool days and adds a lovely handmade touch to casual outfits. The heart motif makes it great for gifting to loved ones or for special occasions like Valentine’s Day. Wear it open or as a light jacket in spring or autumn.

Helpful Tip:

When sewing or single crocheting panels together, always align right sides facing each other for a clean seam on the outside after turning inside out.

Conclusion:

This heart granny square cardigan is a rewarding project combining heart motifs with classic granny squares. It offers customization in colors and fits various sizes with ease. Whether for yourself or a thoughtful gift, this piece showcases both creativity and crochet skills.
