Let’s make a special basket that can hold all your dirty clothes, and when you don’t need it, you can make it small and put it away easily. That’s what a foldable laundry hamper is! It’s perfect for keeping your room tidy without taking up much space. And guess what? You can easily make one by yourself!
Foldable Laundry Hamper
Materials and Tools:
- 4 pieces of 1×2 wood (35 inches in length each)
- Dowels cut into 2 pieces of 14 inches and 2 pieces of 12.5 inches
- 2.5-inch multipurpose framing screws
- 2 Nuts and bolts
- Paint or stain (optional)
- 1.5 yards of cotton fabric
- 1.5 yards of heavier twill fabric
- Power drill
Creating The Hamper Frame
Construct the Hamper Base: Cut your 1×2 wood into four 35-inch pieces. These parts will form the vertical frames of the hamper. Next, cut your dowel into two 14-inch sections and two 12.5-inch sections. These will become the top and bottom horizontal frames.
Form the Hamper Shapes: Assemble two rectangles using the cut wood. One rectangle should have the 14-inch dowels in the middle, and the other should have the 12.5-inch dowels in the middle. Screw the boards at the bottom end of the rectangle to create the base of the hamper, and 2 inches down from the top end to create a space for fabric ties.
Connecting The Hamper Sides
Attach the Hardware: Drill a hole through the mid-point of each 1×2 piece, corresponding with the drill holes on the opposite side. Insert a nut and a bolt through each of the drilled holes, securing the two sides of the hamper together. Ensure that the connection is not too tight, as the hamper needs to be able to fold up.
Fabric Basket Assembly
Prepare the Fabric: Cut a square and four rectangular pieces from both the cotton fabric and the heavier twill. The squares and rectangles will make the bottom and four sides of the fabric basket, respectively.
Assemble the Fabric Basket: Sew together the edges of the four rectangular pieces of cotton fabric to form a box, and do the same for the four pieces of the heavier twill fabric. Attach the square pieces to the base of these formed boxes.
Create Fabric Ties: Cut four 2-inch wide by 20-inch long sections out of your cotton fabric. Fold the lengths and iron them to form the ties. Attach the ties to the four top corners of your assembled fabric boxes, then sew the top edges of the cotton fabric box and the twill fabric box together.
